Contents.RecordinghistoryThe first Mira Calix release was the Pin Skeelingsingle in 1998 on the Warp label, with her debut album, releasedby Warp on March 6, 2000.In 2003 another full length album, appeared, and in that sameyear she collaborated with the, performing herpiece Nunu at the in London. Theprogram, titled Warp Works and 20th Century Masters,included live insects on stage, and was later released on the 3Commissions. This record also included the original version,which had been commissioned by the Geneva Natural HistoryMuseum.2007 saw the release of the third full length Mira Calix album,again on Warp Records.In 2004 she formed - a band/ensemble with pianist Sarah Nicolls and sounddesigner David Sheppard. Their debut performance was at the RavelloFestival in Italy, followed by performances at the AldeburghFestival and Parco della Musica in Rome. Alexander's Annexereleased the album, Push Door To Exit, on Warp in November2006.Mira Calix's earlier music is almost exclusively electronic.However, since 2003 she has incorporated orchestration and liveclassical instruments in her performances and recorded work.
Morerecently she has concentrated mostly on collaborations andcommissions. There have been several installation pieces, filmsoundtracks and works for theatre.Mira set 's to music for a projectcurated by composer for. Extracts from these performances appear onthe album The Elephant In The Room: 3 Commissions releasedin October 2008. The album includes pieces from a videoinstallation work titled Natures, a collaboration withQuayola and cellist Oliver Coates.In December 2008 My Secret Heart premiered at the in London with 80 members of StreetwiseOpera. The piece is inspired by 's 17th century choral work. It is acollaboration with British video artists Flat-Eand continues to tour as an installation.She has written new commissions for the; Rock Music/Rock Art andOrt-Oard, part of the Sinfonietta Shorts series toCelebrate their 40th Birthday.In February 2009 she created the soundtrack to an installationof swinging light pendulums. Chorus was produced byUnited Visual Artists for the opening of theHoward Assembly Rooms, 's headquarters in Leeds.
In2009 she contributed a cover of a song to the compilation.later in the year she worked with of for a sessionon BBC Radio 3's.In December of 2009, Mira Calix won a British Composer Award, inthe category of Community or Educational Project, for My SecretHeart. It was described by a judge as, “transformational, capturingraw humanity and giving voice to the disenfranchised in asound-world which is original, absorbing and unsettling.” My SecretHeart also won aAward in 2009.
Mira Calix, real name Chantal Passamonte, is an artist signed to Warp Records who mixes her intimate vocals with jittering beats and experimental electronic textures. Having previously worked as press officer for Warp Records she quit to concentrate on producing her own material. Her first release on Warp was the 'Ilanga' 10' co-produced with Autechre.
The 'Pin Skeeling' single followed in 1998 notably featuring a Boards of Canada remix. Her debut album “One on One” was released by Warp on March 6, 2000. This was followed by a cd release of her radio sessions for John Peel later that year. The 'Prickle ep' was released in 2001 featuring an Andrea Parker remix.2003 saw the release of Nunu, a limited edition cd and t-shirt designed by Catherine Haines. The cd featured an 13 minute excerpt from a 30-minute piece created especially for the Micro Music-la Batie Festival De Geneve, 2002, later performed at the Royal Festival Hall. The track is based around the sounds of insects.Passamonte's 2nd full album, Skimskitta was released on Warp in March 2003, featuring more intricate and dark melodies than her debut.2004 saw the release of 3 Commissions, a collection of installation and art soundtracks featuring the full version of Nunu.Eyes Set Against The Sun is Mira Calix's 3rd full album.
